Many students choose to work while pursuing their education in the Netherlands. If you want to work alongside your studies, keep the following requirements in mind.
Do I need a Work Permit (TWV)?
Whether you need a permit depends on your nationality and the type of work you are doing. To qualify for these rules, you must be a student in higher education/studying at a university in the Netherlands.

Rules for Non-EU/EEA Students
- Applying: You cannot apply for a work permit yourself. Only your future employer can apply for you, and they must do so before you sign an employment contract.
- Processing Time: The process takes about 5-6 weeks.
- Hour Restrictions: You are limited to either:
- Full-time work: Only in June, July, and August.
- Part-time work: A maximum of 16 hours per week throughout the year.
Working as Self-Employed
Non-EU international students can work on a self-employed basis without a work permit, provided they continue to meet the requirements of their study residence permit.
- Hours: There is no limit to the working hours you can make as a self-employed individual.
- Requirement: You must register yourself at the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KVK).
Taxes and Responsibilities
- Income Tax: Students must file a tax return once a year (e.g., file in March 2023 for 2022). You may be eligible for a refund if you overpaid.
- Tax Helpline: For questions, call +31555385385.
